Tuesday Alchemy - Dark, Gothic &/or Spooky!

My card today is called Spooky Bird and I used a couple of techniques for the image background.

First I scribbled ink from three SU markers onto a large acrylic block in three equal swaths: Basic Black, Basic Grey and Nearly Navy.  I spritzed that with water and then stamped and "smooshed" (technical term) the ink onto glossy white CS.  When that was dry, I stamped the images in Versamark and embossed them with clear embossing powder.  For the stamps I used SU Papaya Collage, IO Branches of a Tree, and a Penny Black candle.  Then I sponged the edges and towards the center with SU Concord Crush and Memento Tuxedo Black and used a soft cloth to wipe away the ink from the embossed areas.  I guess we could call this technique the Acrylic Block/Emboss Resist/Sponged technique, or Block Resist.  I trimmed the panel to size and set it aside. 

It's a fascinating technique as you can see the smooshed colors underneath the clear embossing powder.  Gives an almost marbled effect to the images, and you never get the same effect twice, which I like.

The card itself consists of layers of SU CS - Basic Black, Pumpkin Pie and Lucky Limeade, plus some papers from Teresa Collins Haunted Hallows 12x12 paper stack.  I used Lucky Limeade for the mat behind the image as well as the paper rosette and applied black ink using the DTP method for the worn, grungy look after first sanding the edges a little.  I ran the spider-printed layer (including mat) through the Big Shot with SU Vintage Wallpaper ef, then sanded the top to distress it a bit.



The embellishment is the paper rosette with a smidge of ribbon and a tag made from Shrinky Dinks, die cut with the Sissix Tags, Scallop Combo #2 and heated with the heat gun.  I painted it with Onyx and Ivory Creative Inspirations paint (multiple layers of each color) and stamped it with gold pigment paint.  I also dry brushed Onyx onto the rosette itself.  Some grey rhinestones finished the card for very little bling (but I had to have some).
